THE ART SHOW – CBC KIDS

From vision to reality: The impact of 'The Art Show' on young artists.

Assignment

The Art Show” is a CBC Kids series designed to inspire young artists by connecting them with the world of art in all its forms. The assignment was to create a platform where children could explore their artistic expression, inspired by diverse sources ranging from art galleries and sculpture gardens to natural settings like parks.

Scope

Approach

Our approach was to develop a series that emphasizes personal voice and cultural reflection. Each episode aims to:

  • Showcase a new child artist and their unique perspective.
  • Explore the inspiration behind each child’s artistic creation, whether it be a local gallery visit or an encounter in nature.
  • Utilize a format that allows children to express their thoughts on life and art openly.

Implementation

Crafting a Narrative Around Inspiration and Creativity

  1. Storyboarding: Each episode begins with identifying the featured child’s interests and inspirations. This involves extensive discussions with the child to understand their cultural and environmental influences.
  2. Environment Design: Tailoring filming environments that resonate with the child’s personal story and artistic inspiration to encourage a natural and expressive portrayal of their artistic process.
  3. Filming: Using a documentary style that captures the child’s thought process and artistic journey. This includes their interactions in inspirational settings as well as the actual art creation process.
  4. Voice Integration: Allowing children to narrate their segments, providing them with a platform to articulate their visions and perspectives directly to the audience.

Outcome

  • Viewer Engagement: The series has become a staple on CBC Kids, known for its engaging content that combines art education with emotional storytelling. The personal and reflective narratives attract a wide audience of both children and parents.
  • Inspirational Stories: Children from various backgrounds have been showcased, with each episode highlighting how accessible and varied artistic inspiration can be. For instance, one episode featured Elijah Marchand, a young filmmaker from Perth, Ontario, whose early exposure to cinema and personal use of a camera led him to pursue cinematography.
  • Cultural Impact: The show promotes cultural understanding and artistic diversity by featuring children from different backgrounds and with different stories, illustrating the universal nature of creativity.
